Basically, how it will work is if you have a free item server or you know where one can be found, post it in this thread and I will edit this thread OP and list it here. It is in the same vein as Yetsuo's "How To Make A Server!" thread. This thread is in part a project I thought up to decrease or maybe (hopefully) even halt the number of free item threads we are getting in this forum. But my opinions aside, what you do in your game is up to you and you are responsible for your own judgement. And I do think that being handed end-game items when you are new and/or inexperienced with Terraria will spoil your experience as well as - in most cases - largely shorten the amount of longevity Terraria will have for you. It may not seem like it but I am tired of it as well.
